Oh, that was a long winter in Serfaus. With all that snow you just have to go into hibernation. Even our cats were lazy and slept most of the time. But now spring has finally arrived. Slowly all the animals in the stables are waking up again. Even our stable cat Flocke is out and about again.
“Hey Flocke, where have you been all this time?” I ask her. “Oh hello Netti, there are now so many mice out on the meadows again, I have to make sure everything is in order. In winter we cats patrol the stables so the mice don’t spread in here, but now we’ve got more to do out on the fields and meadows. Thank goodness, because in winter with the cold and all that snow I really don’t like going hunting outside … brrrrr … far too cold!”
Hmm, lost in thought I wander through the stables. Hunting … mice … but why, our cats always have a bowl full of food standing here. I’m actually a bit jealous – I only get feed three times a day. Suddenly Pocca crosses my path, I just have to ask her: “Hey Pocca, why do you hunt mice? You always have enough cat food to eat!” Pocca looks at me in total amazement: “Netti, it’s not about the food, it’s all about the hunt! Before we cats moved into the stables, the mice were in charge here. They gnawed on everything … the horse blankets, the feed sacks, even the grooming kits … they were everywhere! But now we’re here, and the mice don’t like that. And honestly, Netti … we don’t really eat them, we just pretend to be the big scary predators so the mice don’t come in the first place!”
Ah, so that’s how it is – I want to try that too … out onto the meadow I go, pulling my fiercest face and looking for mice so I can scare them with my bloodthirsty expression … that’s how it has to work, right! And then along comes Schnapsi, takes one look at me and laughs so hard that tears start running down her face! I’m totally offended: “What? I’m hunting mice … that’s how you do it, Pocca told me so!” – “Oh Netti, you’re a cute little plush horse … only cats can do that … shall I show you how it really works?” … Schnapsi hisses at me, arches her back and shows her teeth … heeeeelp … I gather up all four of my little stubby legs and run back into the stables to my safe box! No, no … I’m never going to mess with a cat – I’d much rather stay the cute little plush horse that I am!
